Cliffie Coates
Engineer Turned
Writer

About

If I had to describe myself I would say I’m a slightly quirky guy with an unusual sense-of-humor.  I enjoy writing, ballroom dancing, most outdoor activities, and good conversation.  My first name is Clifford, but as a child I was given the nickname Cliffie, which some people still call me.  I also hold a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.  Unlike some writers who have written stories all their lives, my interest in writing didn't reemerge until I was an adult.

I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia.  Growing up, I loved the outdoors as well as writing stories and the joy that other people got from them.  At least I did that until sixth grade, when writing for pleasure moved to the back burner, because I became involved with other interests, such as science, math, & the Boy Scouts.  In particular, and due in large part to several great teachers, I liked learning about History, Physics, Calculus, and Spanish.  After school I was active on my high school’s academic team (think:  Jeopardy-style questions) and camped, hiked, canoed, rappelled, and did other activities with my Boy Scout troop and family.  Oh, and I loved maps (and still do).  I love planning trips, even if I don’t get to go on them.

My interest in writing stories reemerged after I had earned my mechanical engineering degree and worked for several years as an engineer.  It was then that and realized that my creative side needed to be explored.  While engineering can involve lots of creativity, it isn't the kind of creativity that still interests mee.  Thus, after six-and-a-half years working as an engineer, I left my job to pursue my interest in writing fiction, which was one of the best decisions that I have ever made
